Adding to the mathematics discussion, I just found this great website called Living Math!
It has a fantastic reading list for both children and parents as well as games, articles, an e-list, etc. The author, Julie Brennan, is a homeschooler and unschool-friendly. She also emphasizes the importance of parents developing an amicable relationship with math if they are to support their children's positive awakening to it. She provides plenty of resources to help parents on that path. She also emphasizes math history and literature stating, "I believe that the way we isolate mathematics learning with the contrived, unrealistically applied arithmetic our children are taught without the human drama that created it has caused much of the math illiteracy ("innumeracy" to use Paulos' word) and phobias our generation of educators, whether in home or classroom, experienced and pass on, as they know nothing else."
I couldn't agree more!
